The Power of Simplicity... The Power of ‘That' Multiplicity...
let me be straightforward here.. as straightforward, simple and honest as the movie is.. despite very few dialogues, david lynch says here more about the human condition than a great majority of elaborate theories and philosophies..
‘the straight story' incorporates great personal triumphs and failures, and definitely can be treated as a universal tale that can be understood in all four corners of the world.. being on the road when the only means of transport is a lawnmower that occasionally fails you as well as your health is pretty much unusual, but that immanent imperative that drives you to do things that well exceed your abilities is something that most of us can somehow relate to.. i'm sure you've happened to do something that seemed to be out reach but later it turned out that you managed (eight thats in this paragraph so far and more coming:)).. you succeeded though you thought it was mission impossible.. the satisfaction that came with it was all yours.. and all those beer stories..:)
those who are quoted and remembered for their achievements often need/needed very few words, notes, strokes of brush and so on to express themselves.. i believe that not for all those twisted movies david lynch has shot so far will he be remembered for, but this simple feature.. why? try to speak about important things not sounding banal at the same time.. imho, he's succeeded..
some words can't be taken back.. some words unspoken sound louder and echo forever.. life goes on whether you want it or not.. clichés? perhaps.. but in the case of ‘the straight story' they constitute a true work of art..
postscript #1 pay attention to the main character's daughter played by sissy spacek!
postscript #2 i'm sure that (another one:)) the soundtrack won't escape your attention!
postscript #3 to my mind, the film's biblical in its mood - listen to kaczmarski's ‘stworzenie świata'!
postscript #4 isn't it somehow similar to ‘into the wild'?
postscript #5 read ‘on the road' by jack kerouac!
postscript #6 we're gonna watch ‘walk the line' (a biopic on johnny cash) very soon and it's a tightrope walk!
postscript #7 come tomorrow night!

I’m the King of England! A man can have no better conceit of himself than that!
